Ethers i.e. R - O - R are generally defined as :
a. Dialkyl Derivative of water i.e. H - O - H to R - O - R .
b. Alkyl derivative of Alcohol i.e. R-O-H to R - O - R.
Chemical properties of Ethers are generally identical with Alcohols.
Here I am going to explain the Types of Nomenclature of Ethers for JEE mains , JEE advance & NEET examination .
Ethers Nomenclature is usually done in following ways :
a. Common names
b. In Epoxy System
c. IUPAC Nomenclature
d. Cyclic System.
Common Nomenclature of Ethers :
In Common system Ethers like R - O - R' can be named as Alkylalkyl ether ( Both Alkyl groups are different ) .
If Both the alkyl groups are same then name can be written as Dialkyl ether.
CH3-O-C2H5 : EThyl methyl ether
CH3-O-CH3 : Dimethyl Ether
CH3-CH2-CH2-O-CH2-CH3 : Ethyl Propyl ether,
IUPAC Nomenclature
In IUPAC system , Ethers are considered as Alkoxy substituent & Their Name is written as Alkoxy Alkane .\
CH3 - O - CH2 - CH3 : Methoxy Methane
CH3 - O - CH2 - CH2 - O-CH3 : 1,2-Dimethoxy Ethane.
Ethers Can named on the basis of Cyclic System & Epoxy system in following ways for JEE mains , JEE advance & NEET exams .
